Why I Switched To FireFox and Asked OKCupid for a Refund

A few minutes ago I was using Google Chrome for my primary web browser. For the last few months, I’ve been an OKCupid A-List subscriber. Now I’m writing this article using Mozilla FireFox, and I’ve asked OKCupid to refund the unused portion of my subscription payment.

OKCupid Doesn't Like FireFox
OKCupid Doesn’t Like FireFox

On the browser front there are some technical reasons for the browser change. There’s the fact that FireFox is open source and seems faster in the short time I’ve returned to it. I also really missed the FireFox search bar that lets me add custom search engines and choose between them with a mouse click. I was only using Chrome because it had some helpful integration with my Android devices, but overall FireFox is a better browser in my opinion. The reason I made the switch today though, was seeing a story of OKCupid asking their users not to use FireFox while visiting their site, because Mozilla’s new CEO, Brendan Eich donated money to Prop 8 in California, a referendum to ban gay marriage.

Here’s the text of the message;

Hello there, Mozilla Firefox user. Pardon this interruption of your OkCupid experience.

Mozilla’s new CEO, Brendan Eich, is an opponent of equal rights for gay couples. We would therefore prefer that our users not use Mozilla software to access OkCupid.

Politics is normally not the business of a website, and we all know there’s a lot more wrong with the world than misguided CEOs. So you might wonder why we’re asserting ourselves today. This is why: we’ve devoted the last ten years to bringing people—all people—together. If individuals like Mr. Eich had their way, then roughly 8% of the relationships we’ve worked so hard to bring about would be illegal. Equality for gay relationships is personally important to many of us here at OkCupid. But it’s professionally important to the entire company. OkCupid is for creating love. Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame, and frustration are our enemies, and we wish them nothing but failure.

If you want to keep using Firefox, the link at the bottom will take you through to the site.

However, we urge you to consider different software for accessing OkCupid.

Why Would an Atheist Libertarian Oppose OKCupid’s Support for Marriage Equality?

Given the fact that I’m an atheist libertarian, it might come as a surprise to some people that I got so pissed off at such a message. Surely only statist religious nuts would take offense, right?

First of all, I don’t support Prop 8, but it’s not as if OKCupid is sending some kind of anti-state message here. The message went on to encourage users to switch to Google Chrome or Internet Explorer. I don’t think marriage licenses should exist, much less be limited to those the State deems fit. I do however think marriage license restrictions are a far lesser danger than the NSA’s PRISM program, which Google and Microsoft’s past and present involvement in has been well documented. If not for Edward Snowden, we would still be in the dark on this issue, and these companies are still feeding all our data to the government. I’m far less concerned with Prop 8, than I am with Bill Gates promoting global warming nonsense, and saying vaccinations and health care policy will help us solve overpopulation. I think Google openly embracing feminism, and promoting the “ban bossy” campaign, as a brand, is far more offensive than what the CEO of FireFox did as an individual, before he even had the job.

FireFox is open source, completely open source. It is not a spy weapon like Chrome and IE. If OKCupid gave a shit about freedom, they would have told Chrome and IE users to switch browsers months ago. So what their message to FireFox users tells me is far from caring about freedom, what they care about is a leftist political agenda. It’s a message not of liberty, but of egalitarianism, and I am sick and tired of working my ass off to fund these kinds of campaigns.

I didn’t give money to OKCupid so they could promote the Democratic party and bash open source. I gave money to OKCupid so I could meet women.

The OKCupid message in part said;

OkCupid is for creating love. Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame, and frustration are our enemies, and we wish them nothing but failure.

Well OKCupid, ChristopherCantwell.com is for creating liberty, not egalitarianism. Those who seek to deny liberty and instead enforce egalitarianism, political correctness, statism, far left political agendas and violence upon society are my enemy, and I wish them nothing but failure. So either get out of politics and stick to matchmaking, or give me my money back.

UPDATE: 1:12pm EST 04/01/2014 OKCupid has refunded my payment.
