Too Poor for an Abortion?

I just read a rather disturbing piece in the Huffington Post that I feel perfectly outlines the irresponsibility and subsequent decline of human society. Originally appearing on xoJane, the article was titled “I Was Too Poor for an Abortion“. It tells the story of a married woman who became pregnant, as though by some mysterious, unexpected force. There’s no mention of birth control, condoms, or even sex. Just a married woman who somehow becomes pregnant, and has the nerve to be surprised.

The woman, unemployed and attending college (an education someone else paid for) for whatever reason chose to marry a man who was working full-time at just a few cents above minimum wage. They could barely afford themselves, but as the article reads, never seemed to think much about the ramifications of pumping fertile semen into a fertile vagina. Those ramifications obviously enough being, pregnancy, and the responsibility of caring for a new life.

Unsurprisingly to anyone who has ever taken a 5th grade health class, the woman became pregnant. What is surprising is that the woman went several months without a period, with a growing midsection, before bothering to take a pregnancy test, and even then, only at the behest of her husband. She went to a doctor to confirm the results of the test, and once confirmed, the woman immediately knew she wanted to have an abortion. Neither her, nor her husband wanted children. In fact, when she told her husband she was pregnant, he simply said “Fuck!”.

In her own words, when the doctor began talking to her about options.

“I want an abortion.” The words shot out of my mouth. There was no hesitation; I had known for years that if I had ever gotten pregnant, I would terminate.

There’s a slight problem though, the couple has no money. Condoms are given away for free, and birth control pills can be had for as little as $9/month, but an abortion, well, that’s gonna run you about $800.

It get’s worse…

Since she had ignored her baby bump and lack of menstruation for so long, she was now in her second trimester. The abortion clinic told her that she would have to get in soon, because after the 15 week mark, the price would go up to $1200.

Here’s what has to say about a 15 week old fetus;

Too Poor for an Abortion
Too Poor for an Abortion

Your growing baby now measures about 4 inches long, crown to rump, and weighs in at about 2 1/2 ounces (about the size of an apple). She’s busy moving amniotic fluid through her nose and upper respiratory tract, which helps the primitive air sacs in her lungs begin to develop. Her legs are growing longer than her arms now, and she can move all of her joints and limbs. Although her eyelids are still fused shut, she can sense light. If you shine a flashlight at your tummy, for instance, she’s likely to move away from the beam. There’s not much for your baby to taste at this point, but she is forming taste buds. Finally, if you have an ultrasound this week, you may be able to find out whether your baby’s a boy or a girl!

Of course, there’s no concern for any of this in the article, the author is just trying to figure out how she’s going to get $1200 to kill the thing. Lucky for her, the State is more than happy to reimburse her for the costs. Wonderful folks, aren’t they? She just has to get insurance first, and lay out the cash up front. She has a credit card she can max out, and use the state’s reimbursement to pay it off.

But there’s more complications. Since she was pregnant, she could get her request for insurance expedited, which would take 30 days, leaving her around the 19 week mark. There’s no mention of it in the article either way, but the reader can presume the insurance was also provided by the State.

Once this happened, she went in for the abortion. She was given an ultrasound, and the technician revealed to her that she was further along in her pregnancy than originally thought. She was beyond the 20 week mark, which would have made it illegal to terminate the pregnancy. In what the author describes as an act of kindness, the technician lied, saying that she was just a few days over 19 weeks.

Here’s what has to say about a fetus at 20 weeks;

Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now. He’s also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — about the size of a banana. (For the first 20 weeks, when a baby’s legs are curled up against his torso and hard to measure, measurements are taken from the top of his head to his bottom — the “crown to rump” measurement. After 20 weeks, he’s measured from head to toe.)
He’s swallowing more these days, which is good practice for his digestive system. He’s also producing meconium, a black, sticky by-product of digestion. This gooey substance will accumulate in his bowels, and you’ll see it in his first soiled diaper (some babies pass meconium in the womb or during delivery).

The abortion goes forward, more than half way through the gestation period. In order not to horrify the reader, the author skips the details, but I won’t. Generally, this is done in one of three ways. Since the writer discusses “softening” of the cervix, we can assume it was one of the following two.

Dilation and evacuation

The first step in a D&E is to dilate the cervix. This is often begun about a day before the surgical procedure, and often involves the insertion of multiple laminaria sticks into the cervix. Enlarging the opening of the cervix enables surgical instruments such as a curette or forceps to be inserted into the uterus.

The second step is to remove the fetus. Either a local anesthetic or general anesthesia is given to the woman. A cannula is passed into the uterus. The cannula is attached by tubing to a bottle and a pump that provides a vacuum to remove tissue from the uterus. Forceps are inserted into the uterus through the vagina and used to extract any remaining tissue. This is more likely in pregnancies of 16 weeks or more. A curette is used to scrape the lining of the uterus and remove tissue in the uterus. Lastly, the vacuum is used to ensure removal of fetal body remains in the uterus (such fetal remains can cause serious infections in the woman). The pieces of the fetal body are also examined to ensure that the entire fetus was removed.

Intact dilation and extraction – aka Partial birth abortion

Under the Intact D&X method, the largest part of the fetus (the head) is reduced in diameter to allow ease of passage through the uterine cervix and vagina. According to the American Medical Association, this procedure has four main elements. Usually, preliminary procedures are performed over a period of two to three days, to gradually dilate the cervix using laminaria tents (sticks of seaweed which absorb fluid and swell). Sometimes drugs such as pitocin, a synthetic form of oxytocin, are used to induce labor. Once the cervix is sufficiently dilated, the doctor uses an ultrasound and forceps to grasp the fetus’s leg. The fetus is turned to a breech position, if necessary, and the doctor pulls one or both legs out of the cervix, which some refer to as “partial birth” of the fetus. The doctor subsequently extracts the rest of the fetus, leaving only the head still inside the uterus. An incision is made at the base of the skull, a blunt dissector (such as a Kelly clamp) is inserted into the incision and opened to widen the opening, and then a suction catheter is inserted into the opening. The brain is suctioned out, which causes the skull to collapse and allows the fetus to pass more easily through the cervix. The placenta is removed and the uterine wall is vacuum aspirated using a cannula.

I’ve certainly got some strong feelings about abortion in general, but late term abortions are particularly horrific. Her baby had a heartbeat, and a brain, and genitalia, and eyes, and arms, and legs. This is not a clump of cells. The infant inside her could sense light, and move away from it, it could swallow. To say this doesn’t qualify as life is so depraved I can barely find the words to describe my horror. To tear this unborn creature to bits while still inside its mother, or to cut it’s skull open and vacuum out its brains takes a very special kind of evil not often found in human society.

Yet, xoJane, the Huffington Post, feminists, and other eugenicists everywhere would have us all believe this was some miracle of modern medicine, an act of kindness. We are supposed to feel sorry for this woman, that she wasn’t able to accomplish this ghastly feat with greater ease, and less expense. Despite the widespread availability of birth control, and sex education, despite a huge demand for adoption, despite the welfare State, WIC, food stamps, section 8 housing, subsidized health care, and even government funded abortions, we’re somehow supposed to feel guilty that we weren’t more able to help this woman destroy an infant.

This is irresponsibility at its worst. Did this woman know where babies came from? Of course. Did her husband? Of course. Did they do anything to prevent it? Of course not. They did exactly what every adult knows creates babies. They ignored all the signs of pregnancy until it was too late. And with cold and calculated premeditation, they not only killed the baby, they committed fraud to do it, and they forced the rest of society to be accomplices in their crime.

Too poor for an abortion? No. You are too irresponsible a creature to breath the same air as me. That I would toil, and sweat, and work, to pay taxes that fund this kind of thing makes me sicker than the funding of wars. The left demands that we give up that which is ours, to pay for their food, housing, birth control, and doctor visits, and even when we do, they still have to murder their babies, and still demand that we pay for it.

Fuck that.
