Thoughts for Tonight’s SurrealPolitiks Member Chat 20240911

It’s another 9/11. Trump’s 9/11.

So says the top of the Drudge Report today, as they link to a story in The Atlantic, of all the caustic news sources in this country, and via MSN, no less, doubtless to really lay it on thick as they express their contempt for the reader.

It’s been the subject of some significant commentary on my shows since last year that the Drudge report has become an absolute mockery of itself since I went to prison.

I found myself today, for the first time in a long time, wishing that I had kept up on the minutia of politics more, as I used to do. Even having heard complaints about Drudge on the radio and TV while I was locked up, I was really disturbed when I saw it for myself. Even having witnessed it decline all the more over the last 22 months or so I’ve been able to read it myself, I still found myself saying, literally out loud “What the hell is wrong with these people? Using The Atlantic to attack the Republican Presidential Nominee?”.

How are you supposed to fool anybody when your treason is that brazen? The people who took that outfit over are just dancing in the rubble at this point.

The piece was about last night’s debate of course. The left wing media is celebrating Kamala Harris’s supposed victory over Trump.

I missed the live broadcast myself, and caught a replay on YouTube.

One of the things you hear from the spinsters which I think is valid is that how a candidate fares in a debate depends largely on expectations. There’s a grading curve in which a candidate who is expected to make a complete fool of themselves wins not by outwitting the opponent, but by merely showing up sober and managing not to set anything on fire. In that sense, Kamala undeniably took Trump to the cleaners.

I remember watching Trump debates and rallies and press conferences on the edge of my seat, eager for every syllable and being forever uncertain of what would happen next. His talks on trade policy radically altered my views on economics, and I had held those beliefs quite firmly for years. It was no small matter to penetrate my extremist ideological defenses. I had been trained by some of the best Libertarian spinsters ever to live through podcasts, social media, and blogs. I had an answer for every “statist” argument from abortion to atom bombs. To take me from orthodox free trade fanatic to an advocate of tariffs was like convincing Joe Biden not to sniff the hair of teenage girls on camera, it just doesn’t happen.

A lot of people went through that, and not just because he was correct. Being right has almost nothing to do with it. More often than not the so called “winner” of the debate has the worst ideas of all. He, or with increasing frequency, she, gets by not on the soundness of the ideas, but on their presentation. Being not bound to the rules of honest discussion, they can spice things up or tone things down as they see fit. Having no intention of implementing anything resembling the pitch, they state with confidence whatever they must to accomplish the true objective. Namely, the acquisition, and maintenance, of power.

Trump captured both, the reality, and the presentation, and it propelled him to an almost untouchable status. He famously stated that he could walk out onto 5th avenue and shoot somebody, and for a moment, there was something to that.

Kamala Harris, by contrast, exists in my mind as blooper reels. She’s a moron, an affirmative action hire, a witless vessel that can barely manage to repeat the talking points competently. There’s a lot of suspicion she is an alcoholic and you can find video compilations online where she appears to be slurring her words while talking to the press.

Adding to this soft bigotry of low expectations was the prior debate performance of the man dumb enough to make her VP. Joe Biden has spent the last four years like Mr. Magoo sans the accidental successes. He looks like a complete fool to anyone who pays attention. For those who aren’t paying attention, they still find out what a bad job he has been doing when they see grocery and energy prices multiply, and their daughters get raped by roving packs of wild, two legged animals.

If she came onto that stage, interrupted the moderators, and screamed into the microphone with an Indian accent “F YOU AMERICA! YOU BUNCH OF NAZIS! I WILL DESTROY YOU!” then dropped the mic and walked out of the room, giving Trump the stage to himself for the next 85 minutes, few would have feigned shock, I think fair to say.

I can’t give you a blow by blow account of what happened, sadly. I watched the video and I tried to take it all in, but I just wasn’t captured by it like I used to be. It is now predictable that Trump will simply try to bring everything back to immigration. It is just as predictable that Harris will call Trump a racist and invoke Charlottesville. By this point we know that Trump has adopted the charismatic demagogue mode of politics, and isn’t going to tell the truth about what happened in Charlottesville in the 90 seconds he has to respond. So why get invested intellectually, much less emotionally, in something that meets exactly your expectations?

This is not all I have to say on the matter. Not by a long shot. I actually don’t like leaving this text on that note but I want to get this show description out before airtime, so I’ll stop here and see you at 9:30pm US Eastern on Discord.
